An Introduction to Operation Christmas Child

An accomplished high school graduate, Mason Bird has volunteered with numerous faith-based charities and other outreach organizations. Mason Bird participates regularly as a contributor to Operation Christmas Child, which recently began preparations for the 2013 gifting season.

Operation Christmas Child, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, gathers volunteers each year to send boxed gifts to children across the world. The organization established the program in 1993 and, over the past 20 years, has sent more than 100 million shoeboxes full of gifts to 130 countries. Participants receive suggestions and support for compiling and packing the shoeboxes, yet each box is unique and reflects the interests and hearts of the senders.

Volunteers compile shoeboxes based on the potential recipient’s gender and age group, selecting toys, games, and other age-appropriate items. Popular gift items include art supplies, fashion accessories, kazoos and harmonicas, jump ropes, and light-up toys. Many givers also choose to include practical items such as socks, combs, and toothbrushes. Personal notes and photos are also popular, and givers may include a return address should the child wish to reply.
